Description #
This lecture is concerned with the general aspects of transfusion. We will explore what blood components are available for transfusion, and discuss what makes the ABO antigen system so important. We will also look into decision making on when to transport cells, and how to obtain patient consent for transfusion. This leads us into the next topic of discussion, which is what to do if a patient reacts to a transfusion. Indications for RBC transfusions and decision making around transfusion of RBC will be covered, followed by investigations into red cell transfusion triggers, plasma screens, antibody screens, crossmatching and risks of transfusion transmissible infections. Finally, this lecture concludes with the types of transfusion reactions, acute transfusion reactions, and post-transfusion fever.
