Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) occurs in 5-18% of all pregnancies. It is the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. This unit reviews the definition, risks, prevention and management strategies for PPH.

3. Describe the 4 categories for the primary causes for PPH.
4. Describe the difference between active and physiologic management of the third stage of labour.
5. Describe strategies to resuscitate the woman.
6. List 4 medications, their indication, contraindications, dose and route of administration.
7. Demonstrate bimanual compression and describe its role in the management of PPH.
8. Describe the transport protocol in the event of PPH at a out of hospital birth.
