Description #
The first priority of this lecture is to understand the process of hemostasis (primary, secondary and fibrinolysis), and then to understand the commonly used coagulation tests, the distinct types of hemostasis (damaged endothelial cell layer, platelet plug formation, fibrin clot formation, and defects that occur in primary and secondary hemostasis. We will consider initiation of coagulation, amplification, propagation, stabilization, and discuss how anticoagulants function. To close this lecture we will discuss natural anticoagulants, monitoring anticoagulant therapy, thrombophilia, fibrinolysis, and other coagulation tests.
Learning Objectives #
• Understand process of hemostasis
o Primary hemostasis
o Secondary hemostasis (coagulation)
o Fibrinolysis
• Understand the commonly used coagulation tests
o Indications for testing
o Interpretation of results
