Description #
This lecture will provide an overview of the GI tract, GI modulation and the enteric nervous system. We will look at gastric disorders, and the microscopic anatomy of the GI tract and stomach, and then move on to the pharmacology of stomach acidity, protections of the stomach, prostaglandins of the stomach, and homeostasis of the stomach. This lecture then covers peptic ulcer disease, what causes ulcers and principles of treatment. We will look at acid lowering and neutralizing drugs, their side effects, and protein pump inhibitors. We will discuss mucus/buffer stabilizing agents and prokinetic agents, and then intestinal disorders, fluid electrolyte management, anti-infective agents, anti-motility agents, and non-antimicrobial pharmacological intervention.
