Description #
In the Anemia portion of this lecture, we will first look at systematic approaches to CBC, clinical approaches, pathogenic approaches, and how to determine the cause of anemia. We will discuss CBC analyzers and how to determine the severity of anemia in a patient based on Hgb. Next we will consider microcytic anemia and macrocytic anemia, and components of hemoglobin. Normocytic anemia will also be covered, as will tests for iron deficiency and performing a hemolytic workup. Finally, we will discuss the mechanisms of hemolysis.
In the Everything else portion of this lecture we begin with approaches to understanding a CBC / WBC differential. We look next at how to understand and determine common causes of CBC abnormalities, as well as the approach to any CBC abnormality. The lecture will then move through a series of these abnormalities, including Eosinophilia DDx, Neutrophilia DDx and Neutropenia, Monocytosis DDx, Basophilia DDx, Polycythemia (Erythrocytosis) DDx, Thrombocytosis DDx and Thrombocytopenia DDx, Lymphocytosis DDx and Pancytopenia DDx. Lastly we will discuss bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.
