Description #
This lecture provides an introductory overview of imaging modalities of the spine, including plain film, MRI and CT scans. The lecture begins with a look at common indications for spinal imaging and the first line modalities commonly used, including chronic pain, acute injuries, infection, degenerative disease and metastatic disease. Next the lecture addresses imaging of the cervical spine (upper and lower) and the thoracic and lumbar spine. Following this, five case studies are presented that demonstrate the importance of the radiological processes outlined in the lecture. Returning to metastatic disease in the spine, both osteoblastic metastatic disease and osteoblastic with lytic metastatic disease are described. Finally, we look at acute spinal injuries, including alantooccipital dissociation, the Jefferson fracture, the Dens fracture, Hyperextension Teardrop fractures, Hyperflexion Teardrop fractures, Bilateral Intrafacetal Dislocation, Burst injuries. Concluding this lecture are eight more test cases for your review.
